Dress Code

At Laureate Academy, we aim to prepare our young people for success in their future professions. A key to this success is undoubtedly through the way students present themselves, and it is for this reason that we enforce a professional dress-code and appearance policy. All students are to dress smartly: for boys, this is a suit, shirt and tie, and for girls, a trouser or skirt-suit with a smart blouse. Appearance is to be professional, with hair and make-up plain and unobtrusive, and no facial piercings at any time.

As the eldest students in the school, our Sixth Formers set the standards of conduct and appearance expected by all members of the student community. They should therefore be aware of their appearance, the impression it creates, and the example it gives to younger students. For these reasons, failure to comply with the dress code will lead to the student being sent home to change. They must return to school promptly and catch up any work they have missed.

Pastoral Care

We recognise that the transition into the Sixth Form can be a daunting prospect, encompassing many significant decisions and milestones. At Laureate Academy, we aim to make this transition as easy as possible. Our community is caring and supportive: the same standards of behaviour that are followed by the rest of the student body are expected by sixth formers who, as the eldest members of our student-body, set the standards for the younger years. Students can study or relax with their peers within the positive working environment of the Common Room, where the facilities include laptops and computers to aid independent study. To encourage our young people’s development into responsible adults, there are a variety of roles on offer: students can serve as prefects, on the Prom and Social Committee, on the Charity Committee, or even as Head Boy or Girl.

In our Sixth Form, students each have an allocated Tutor who provides them with the support and guidance they need to make these decisions. A tutor is there to answer questions, adjust to the changes, and develop as an independent and thoughtful young adult. Moreover, in Sixth Form Tutor Time, various activities contribute to students’ development. From discussions on the latest topical news stories to revision and mentoring support, supplemented by weekly assemblies, Laureate Academy’s Sixth Form offers a nurturing environment that helps students to achieve their aspirations and prepares them for their future lives.

Education Enrichment and Careers Support

At Laureate Academy Sixth Form, we pride ourselves on the rich range of extracurricular and enrichment opportunities on offer. Working in close contact with the Future Academies team, we have designed a bespoke programme which we believe gives our students opportunities on a par with those offered in the private sector. We invite specialists in to talk to students about world issues such as topical news stories, politics, mental health, health & nutrition, road safety and climate change. There have been opportunities in the past for students to study for TEFL and First Aid qualifications, and also to observe and take part in public speaking and debating.

We encourage our young people to think carefully about future education, whether that be an apprenticeship or a university pathway. Students’ subject-teachers and tutors will help to individually guide them through this process, and additional UCAS events are held throughout Year 12 to introduce students to the application process. For students considering applying to Oxbridge, we have an exclusive partnership with Balliol College, and students have the opportunity to attend talks about the application process from their representatives, as well as visit the college itself. We also understand that students are not alone in this process, and we provide support to parents on the application process, helping to alleviate some of the concerns that they might face around funding and accommodation for their children.

We are also highly invested in providing our students with the opportunity to consider their future career opportunities and to explore the working world. All Sixth Form students will receive CV guidance, practice application and interview processes, and participate in work experience, working to the goal of familiarisation with professional life. We hold regular careers events, and tutors and subject teachers are always happy to mentor students to help them consider their options.

16-19 Bursary Fund

The 16-19 Bursary is a government-run scheme designed to provide funding for students who need financial support to stay on in further education or training. The money can be used for all education-related costs, such as books, stationary, equipment or the cost of educational visits and trips.

To apply for a Discretionary Bursary from the fund, you must be in full-time or part-time further education. Moreover, your parents must receive any of the following:

  • Income Support; Employment Support Allowance (Income Related); Income-Based Job Seekers Allowance; Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit; or Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
  • Child Tax Credit (provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit).
  • OR if they have an annual taxable income which, from April 2019, does not exceed £30,000.

In addition, you may be eligible for the funding in the form of a Vulnerable Student Bursary if you:

  • Are currently in, or have recently left, Local Authority Care.
  • Receive Income Support or Universal Credit in your own name.
  • Are disabled and receive BOTH Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance, OR Personal Independence Payments in your own name.
